Choosing a fragrance
Start with the mood you want in the room. City Grandeur, London is bright and structured: citrus, black tea and rosemary for a hallway, a study or a kitchen that needs waking up. Dancing Light, Lake Como is green and luminous, fig leaf and wisteria over an aquatic accord, for a bedroom or a spring table. Glorious Gardens, England is an abundant English floral. Island Breeze, Seychelles is frangipani, gardenia and coconut, a holiday in a room. Highland Retreat, Scotland is cognac, smoke and leather for evenings by the fire. Night Blooms, India is pomegranate, jasmine and clove for dinner parties and late nights. Each fragrance has its own story page with the full notes, and every one is made in three formats: a 300g candle, an 80g candle and a 200ml reed diffuser.
Our three families are a fair guide. Fresh, City Grandeur, London and Dancing Light, Lake Como, suits the rooms you work or cook in. Floral, Glorious Gardens, England and Island Breeze, Seychelles, suits a living room or a bedroom. Amber, Highland Retreat, Scotland and Night Blooms, India, suits the rooms you settle into after dark. For unwinding, Highland Retreat. For lifting a room, Island Breeze or City Grandeur. For a dinner party, Night Blooms. They all work all year, and yours will differ from ours.
Yes. Highland Retreat, Scotland and Night Blooms, India are the richest and carry furthest; Dancing Light, Lake Como and Glorious Gardens, England are lighter and more luminous. Every fragrance is made at a high fragrance load, so if you prefer a subtler effect, use fewer reeds in the diffuser or choose the 80g candle for a smaller room.
City Grandeur, London is the easiest first choice: a fresh citrus woods that is neither too floral nor too heavy, at home in any room. Glorious Gardens, England is the natural second, an English garden in bloom that most people warm to at once.
Night Blooms, India. Opulent jasmine sambac, clove and vanilla make it warm and sensual, and it fills a room without crowding it. It is the one to light before people arrive.
Our fragrances sit in three families. If you love fresh scents, start with City Grandeur, London (citrus, black tea, rosemary) or Dancing Light, Lake Como (fig leaf, wisteria, star jasmine). If you love florals, Glorious Gardens, England (rose, magnolia, violet) or Island Breeze, Seychelles (frangipani, gardenia, coconut). If you love warm, spiced or woody scents, Highland Retreat, Scotland (cognac, smoke, leather) or Night Blooms, India (pomegranate, jasmine, clove). The Fresh, Floral and Amber collection pages group them the same way.
Yes, and most people do. A diffuser scents a room continuously, so it suits a hallway or a bathroom you pass through; a candle is for the room you are actually sitting in. If you are running two fragrances at once, either keep them in the same family or put them far enough apart that they meet in a corridor rather than in the middle of a room. As a rough guide, Fresh suits a kitchen or a study, Floral a living room or a bedroom, and Amber the rooms you settle into after dark.
All Told London candles and diffusers are designed and made here in England: the candles are hand-poured and the diffusers filled.
The porcelain is made to be kept: the 300g candle and the 200ml diffuser are refillable, and every vessel can be reused long after the fragrance is finished.
The porcelain is made to be kept: the 300g candle and the 200ml diffuser are refillable, and every vessel can be reused long after the fragrance is finished.
The 300g candle burns for around 60 hours, the 80g candle for approximately 16 hours, and the reed diffuser lasts for around twelve weeks.
Every fragrance we make is vegan except Glorious Gardens, England: it uses a traditional fixative that is not plant-based, and we chose not to reformulate a fragrance we love for the sake of a label. The wax is plant-based throughout, we never test on animals, our perfumery houses hold to the same standard, and we do not sell in countries that require animal testing. Told London was a Conscious Brand finalist at the Boutique Star Awards 2025.
Yes, each Told London vessel features hand-drawn illustrations inspired by the scent’s story and place of origin. While they share the same elegant porcelain form, the artwork and mood are unique to each fragrance. Many customers collect them as timeless design objects.
Yes. Each fragrance is built like a fine perfume, with top notes that open it, a heart that develops over the first hour, and a base that stays in the room. Highland Retreat, Scotland, for example, opens on cognac and smoke, moves into smoked cinnamon, clove and leather, and settles into sandalwood, vetiver and amber. Our journal piece on top, heart and base notes explains how to read a fragrance this way.
Fine fragrance for the home is built to the standard of fine personal perfume: the same perfumery houses, the same layered structure of top, heart and base notes, the same care in the raw materials. The difference is the medium. A candle or diffuser fills a room rather than sitting on skin, so the balance of notes and the fragrance load are worked out for the air of a room. We are now working on our first eau de parfum.
The Wanderings Collection is our current collection, each fragrance inspired by a place that matters to us: London, an English garden, the Scottish Highlands, India, the Seychelles and Lake Como. Every fragrance comes as a 300g candle, an 80g candle and a 200ml reed diffuser, in fine porcelain illustrated by Kerry Lemon, with refills for the 300g candle and the diffuser. The Wanderings Collection page tells the story of each place.
Candles
Because porcelain lasts. A fine porcelain vessel does not scratch, stain or cloud, it holds a flame safely, and it takes Kerry Lemon’s illustration in a way glass cannot. It is made to be refilled for years and to be worth keeping when it is not holding a candle at all. Invest in the porcelain once; refill the fragrance.
The candles are poured in 100% natural soy wax with lead-free cotton wicks. The 300g candle refills use a natural soy and rapeseed wax, chosen so the refill sets cleanly in the vessel and burns for the same sixty hours. Soy burns cooler and cleaner than paraffin and releases the fragrance steadily rather than all at once.
Wash the vessel in warm soapy water, taking care over the illustration, and it is ready for its next life. Most people refill it with a new candle of the same or a different fragrance. Some keep it on a desk for pens and brushes, use it as a small vase, keep jewellery in it, or grow herbs on a windowsill in it. The porcelain does not mind which.
Diffusers
Yes. Every diffuser is made at a high fragrance load and has been tested in large rooms. In a big or open-plan space, use all the reeds and stand the diffuser where air moves through the room.
Insert all the reeds for the maximum fragrance throw or fewer reeds for a subtler scent. Place in a central location, flip the reeds every week or two to refresh the fragrance (note: flipping more often boosts scent but will use up the fragrance faster).
A 200ml diffuser is made at a high fragrance load and will scent a normal living room, hallway or bedroom comfortably. In a large or open-plan space, use all the reeds and place the diffuser where air moves through the room; in a small room, use fewer reeds. It lasts around twelve weeks.
Refills
Let the old candle finish, then wash the vessel in warm soapy water and lift out any remaining wax and the wick base. Dry it. The refill is a 300g candle with its wick already set, wrapped in illustrated paper; drop it into the vessel and it is ready to light. It burns for the same sixty hours as the original and costs less than a new candle.
Yes, you can choose a different scent refill for your existing vessel. Candle refills fit any Told London 300g porcelain vessel and diffuser refills any Told London 200ml vessel, so feel free to try a new fragrance in the porcelain you already have.
Yes. The refill is the same 300g of fragrance, poured in a natural soy and rapeseed wax with a lead-free cotton wick, and it burns for the same sixty hours. It arrives wrapped in illustrated paper in an illustrated cotton bag, rather than in a new porcelain vessel, which is why it costs less than a new candle.
Wash and dry the porcelain vessel, pour in the new 200ml of fragrance, and insert the fresh reeds. Every diffuser refill comes boxed with its fragrance and a new set of reeds. It costs less than a new diffuser and lasts around twelve weeks.
Indefinitely. Our high-quality porcelain is very durable, so you can keep refilling and reusing it for years. As long as you take basic care when cleaning and refilling, the vessel is designed to be a long-lasting keepsake.
Currently, our refill system is designed for our 300g candles and 200ml diffusers. We do not yet offer refills for the 80g minis, which are intended as an entry-size or travel option.
Not yet. A refill subscription is something we would like to offer; the newsletter will say when it exists.
Accessories
Yes, we offer beautifully designed wick trimmers and snuffers to complement your candle care ritual. They help extend the life of your candle and preserve the integrity of the wax and wick.
Care and safety
Every Told London fragrance complies with the latest Standards of the International Fragrance Association (IFRA), and every product is labelled to the CLP Regulation with its allergen list and safety guidance. The formulas contain no phthalates or parabens. Like any fragranced product, a candle or diffuser liquid is not to be eaten, drunk or put on the skin, and should be kept away from children, pets and waterways. The full safety information for each product is on our product safety page and on its packaging.
Our products are safe when used as intended and placed out of reach of children and pets. Like all fragranced products, candles and diffuser liquid should never be ingested or applied to the skin. Always supervise use and follow safety guidance on the label.
First burn: let the wax melt right to the edge of the vessel, two to three hours, so the candle burns evenly from then on. Before each burn, trim the wick to about 5 mm. Burn on a heat-resistant surface, away from draughts, and never leave a lit candle unattended or within reach of children or pets. The porcelain warms while the candle burns; let it cool before you move it. When the candle is finished, wash the vessel in warm soapy water and refill it, or keep it for something else. Store candles somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sunlight.
Light the candle half an hour before people arrive, so the room is scented rather than the candle. Keep the lid off while it burns and on when it is not. Put a diffuser where you pass it: a hallway, a landing, a bathroom. And let the vessel be part of the room; it was drawn to be looked at. Our journal piece on fragrancing your home with intention goes further.
We recommend using a Told London snuffer to avoid splatter. Re-centre the wick while the wax is soft, and cover with your Told London solid metal lid once cooled to protect the wax.
Allow the candle to burn long enough on first use (2–3 hours) to form an even melt pool. If tunnelling occurs later, try letting the candle burn for a full 4 hours on the next use to correct the wax memory. Trimming the wick can also help even the burn.
Soot usually means the wick is too long or the candle is standing in a draught. Trim the wick to 0.5 cm before every burn and keep the candle away from open windows and vents. Once the wax has cooled, wipe the inside rim of the porcelain with a soft cloth.
Every product is labelled to the CLP Regulation, and the allergens present in each fragrance are listed on its packaging and on our product safety information page, so you can check a specific ingredient before you buy. If you are sensitive to scent generally, start with the 80g candle or a diffuser with fewer reeds, and choose one of the lighter fragrances, such as Dancing Light, Lake Como.
Gifting
For someone whose taste you do not know, Glorious Gardens, England and City Grandeur, London are the safest choices: a warm English floral and a fresh citrus woods that suit almost any room. For a traveller, give them their place: Island Breeze, Seychelles or Dancing Light, Lake Como. The 80g candle is a lovely way to introduce someone to the brand, and a gift card lets them choose. Our journal piece on the art of gifting fragrance has more.
Yes, you can enter the recipient’s address at checkout for direct delivery. We never include prices in the package: the receipt is emailed only to you.
Not at the moment. Every fragrance comes in the same three formats all year round, with no seasonal editions. If you want to give more than one, a gift card or an 80g candle from each of two families makes a good pair. The newsletter is where any new format will be announced first.
Yes. Told London eGift Cards are sent by email to the recipient, or to you to pass on, and can be spent on anything on the site. They are the right answer when you do not know which fragrance someone would choose.
Not yet for individual orders. Corporate gifting orders include a printed message card with each gift; for everything else, a gift card arrives by email with your message. No prices are ever included in a parcel.
Each order goes to one address. If you are sending gifts to several people, place one order per address, or contact us at contact@toldlondon.com and we will help. Corporate orders can be delivered to multiple addresses from a single list; see our corporate gifting page.
No. The vessels are illustrated by Kerry Lemon and we do not engrave or personalise them. A gift card, sent by email with your own message, is the personal touch we can offer.
Corporate gifting
Told London offers the Wanderings Collection in packs of six, available in every fragrance, as 300g porcelain candles, 80g porcelain candles and 200ml porcelain reed diffusers. Each pack can be ordered in a single fragrance or as a curated mix. A bespoke printed message card is included with each gift, carrying a message of your choice on Told London card stock.
Buyers across five settings: property and interiors (developers and designers gifting clients into new homes), professional services (law, finance, family office, private wealth, music management and other talent-led practices), concierge and private client services (high-end concierge teams, private travel companies, members’ clubs), galleries and cultural institutions (donor relations, patron and benefactor gifting), and employee recognition and milestone gifting (long service, retirements, exits). If your context isn’t named here, the offer still applies.
Customisation extends to a bespoke printed message card included with each gift, carrying a single message of your choice. The Told London packaging is itself a brand artefact, and the gift is most powerful when it carries that identity intact.
Five working days from payment to delivery, or five working days from the order where terms have been agreed. At peak periods such as Christmas this can extend, and we will confirm at the point of enquiry.
Yes. Provide your recipient list as a spreadsheet and we’ll handle dispatch.
Email corporate@toldlondon.com with an outline of what you are looking to do: occasion, approximate volume, fragrance preferences if you have them, timing, and delivery requirements. We will respond personally with the next steps.
No. Corporate pricing runs through a Told London trade account and is shared once your account is open.
Pro-forma or terms by arrangement at the point of onboarding.
No. Refills are designed for engaged Told London customers who already own a porcelain vessel. The corporate gifting offer is the Wanderings Collection in original packs of six; refills sit on the standard Told London website for individual purchase. The refillable design of the vessel remains part of why Told London is a considered corporate gift: the porcelain lasts well beyond the candle or diffuser inside it.
Yes. Told London supplies companies, property and interiors professionals, private client services and cultural institutions with packs of six, in any mix of fragrances and formats, with a printed message card of your choice. Orders can be delivered to one address or to a list of recipients. Email corporate@toldlondon.com with the occasion, the rough quantity and the timing, and we will reply personally. Trade
We would love to hear from you. Told London sells to stockists in packs of six, in any mix of fragrances and formats, with testers available and a minimum opening order. Email trade@toldlondon.com with your shop, its location and what you have in mind, and we will send the trade terms and price list. Our trade page has more.
Sustainability
Both. A refill costs less than buying the candle or diffuser again, because you are not paying for the porcelain twice. And nothing is thrown away: the vessel stays in use, the candle refill comes wrapped in paper in an illustrated cotton bag, and the diffuser refill comes in an FSC-certified box. Refill, don’t replace.
In the specific things rather than the general ones. Every vessel is fine porcelain, and every 300g candle and 200ml diffuser is made to be refilled for years. The wax is plant-based. The packaging is FSC-certified card and paper, the bags are cotton from Bags of Ethics, and there is no plastic in any of it. Every fragrance complies with IFRA standards and we never test on animals. The candles are hand-poured and the diffusers filled in England, and everything ships from one warehouse in Sussex. Our sustainability page sets it out in full.
Our fragrances are composed by the perfumery houses Mastenbroek, Sozio, Givaudan, CPL Aromas and Fragrance Oils from natural and safe synthetic materials, to the latest Standards of the International Fragrance Association. Where a note would traditionally come from an animal, such as musk, it is made synthetically. Every fragrance is vegan except Glorious Gardens, England, and none is tested on animals.
The 300g candle refills come wrapped in illustrated paper inside an illustrated cotton drawstring bag made by Bags of Ethics, a B Corp certified maker of cotton bags. The bag is yours to keep; a great many of ours hold jewellery, chargers and children’s treasures. Diffuser refills come in a box, with the fragrance and a fresh set of reeds.

Shipping and delivery
Everything on the site ships from our warehouse in Sussex to the United Kingdom, every EU country, the rest of Europe, North America, the Middle East and most of the world. The full country list and the delivery times and costs for each are on our shipping policy page. If your country is not listed, contact us and we will see what we can do.
Orders placed before 12 noon UK time on a working day (Monday to Friday, excluding UK bank holidays) are dispatched the same day; orders placed later, at the weekend or on a bank holiday are dispatched the next working day, as are all international orders. Delivery times count from dispatch: UK mainland orders arrive the next working day, the Highlands, islands and Northern Ireland in two to five working days, the European Union in two to five, and North America, the Middle East and the rest of the world in two to six. DPD does not deliver at weekends, so a UK order placed after noon on Friday arrives on Tuesday. Couriers and customs can add a day or two. You will have a tracking link from the moment it leaves.
UK mainland delivery is the next working day after dispatch, and orders placed before 12 noon UK time, Monday to Friday, are dispatched the same day; the Highlands, islands and Northern Ireland take two to five working days. The European Union takes two to five working days, with VAT and duties paid, and the rest of Europe, North America, the Middle East and the rest of the world two to six. Every destination has free delivery above an order threshold. The rates and thresholds for each are set out in our shipping policy, and the exact cost is shown at checkout before you pay.
If you are in the European Union, no: your order is sent Delivered Duty Paid and everything is included in the price you pay us. If you are elsewhere outside the United Kingdom, your customs authority may charge duties or local taxes on delivery, and those are payable by you; the courier will contact you if anything is due. We complete all the paperwork on our side.
We take great care in packing your order. Each porcelain candle or diffuser is nestled securely in its box, and then placed in a sturdy outer shipping box with ample cushioning. Our goal is that it arrives in perfect condition.
Yes. Once your order ships, you’ll receive a shipping confirmation email with a tracking number and a link to track the shipment. You can follow the progress all the way to your doorstep. If you have an account on our site, the tracking info will also be available in your order history.
Tell us. If your tracking has stopped moving or the parcel is well past its expected date, email contact@toldlondon.com with your order number and we will chase the courier. If the courier has lost it or damaged it, we will replace it or refund you.
In most cases, no signature is required unless requested. Our couriers may leave the package in a safe place or attempt redelivery. You can track and manage your delivery via the courier’s link.
Unfortunately, due to the fragile nature of our porcelain vessels, we are unable to ship to PO boxes or military forwarding addresses.
Returns and exchanges
Please let us know within a few days of delivery if something arrives damaged. Email our customer support team with your order number and photos of the damage. We will promptly arrange a replacement or refund for the affected item. (And we’ll file a claim with the carrier so you’re not inconvenienced.) We want you to enjoy our products at their best, so we’ll make it right.
If you change your mind, you have 21 days from the day you receive your order if you are in the United Kingdom, and 14 days if you are outside it, to tell us and return it. Products must be unopened and unused; a candle that has been lit or a diffuser that has been opened cannot be returned. We refund the price you paid, including the delivery charge, by the method you paid with, within 14 days of receiving the goods back. Return postage is yours to pay unless the product is faulty or not what you ordered. Our terms of service set this out in full.
Simply contact our customer support (email or the form on our Contact page) with your order number and the item you’d like to return/exchange. We’ll provide you with return instructions, including the return shipping address. If it’s an exchange, let us know which alternative product or scent you’d prefer. We’ll guide you through the process and keep you updated.
No. A candle that has been lit or a diffuser that has been opened cannot be returned for a refund, because it can no longer be sold. Unopened products can be returned within 21 days of delivery in the United Kingdom, or 14 days elsewhere.
Our sincere apologies. In the rare event we send the wrong scent or if there’s a quality issue, contact us immediately. We will arrange to send you the correct item right away, and we’ll cover any shipping costs to return or replace the item. For defects (e.g. a diffuser bottle leaking, or a candle with a production flaw), we will replace it. Your satisfaction is very important to us, and we stand by our quality control.
Within 14 days of the returned goods reaching us, and usually within a few working days. The refund goes back by the method you paid with, and we email you when it is sent; your bank may take a few more days to show it.
Yes, if your product is unopened, you can exchange it for another scent (subject to stock availability). Just initiate a return or exchange request as described above, and mention which scent you’d like instead. We’ll provide instructions: often, we’ll ask you to return the original (in sellable condition), and we’ll send out the new scent choice. If there’s a price difference (for example, exchanging an 80g candle for a 300g), we’ll settle that with you. We want you to get a fragrance you truly love.
Yes. Email contact@toldlondon.com with the name of the person who ordered, or the order number if you have it, and we will arrange an exchange for another fragrance or store credit in your name to spend when you like. The product needs to be unopened and unused, and we do not tell the person who gave it.
If a product is faulty or not what you ordered, we pay the return postage and send a replacement or refund at once. If you have changed your mind, the return postage is yours to pay, from anywhere in the world.
Yes. To ensure safe transit and processing, items should be returned in their original outer box and packaging inserts.
No. Purchases made through our website must be returned via our online returns process. Our stockists operate independently and cannot process returns for orders placed directly with us.
About Told London
Kerry Lemon, the British artist and illustrator. Every Told London vessel carries her hand-drawn motifs, briefed by Lillie from the memories behind each fragrance: a red telephone box and a top hat for London, a stag and a thistle for the Highlands, a peacock and a pomegranate for India. The drawings come first and the fragrance is composed to them, so the porcelain is not packaging. It is the first chapter of the story, and the fragrance is the second. Our journal piece on how a vessel is made follows a drawing from her desk to the kiln.
Told London was founded in 2023 by Lillie and Christopher Edgar and launched in March 2025. Lillie grew up in the Seychelles, with childhood visits to her grandparents’ home in India; the two of them met in Aberdeen, made a life in London, Kent and Sussex, and now live on Lake Como. Each fragrance began as one of those places. The idea was simple and has not changed: fragrance for the home made to the standard of fine perfume, in a vessel worth keeping.
Stories in fragrance. Stories in art. Told London. Told is the word for that: each scent is a place told in fragrance, and each porcelain vessel tells it again in illustration. London is where the company is registered and where the story began. The founders' own phrase for what the brand makes is fragrance as art, crafted to be treasured.
Yes, and we name them. City Grandeur, London and Dancing Light, Lake Como were created at Mastenbroek by Ruth and Nic Mastenbroek. Highland Retreat, Scotland was composed by Julie Dunkley at Sozio. Glorious Gardens, England was composed by Andrea Montanari at Givaudan. Night Blooms, India was created at CPL Aromas, and Island Breeze, Seychelles at Fragrance Oils. The houses are among the most respected in perfumery and the same ones behind well-known personal fragrances.
Most scented candles are built around one pleasant note. Ours are composed like a fine perfume, with a top, a heart and a base that unfold over hours, by the same perfumery houses that make personal fragrance. They are hand-poured or filled in England, in fine porcelain illustrated by Kerry Lemon, and made to be refilled rather than thrown away. The result is a fragrance that develops in the room the way a good perfume develops on skin.
In 2026 Told London won two Platinum Beauty Awards: Best Luxury Diffuser, for the Glorious Gardens, England reed diffuser, and Best Luxury Candle, for the Dancing Light, Lake Como 300g candle. Dancing Light also won Excellence in Home Fragrance at the Attracta Beauty Awards 2026 and was a finalist for Best Interior Fragrance at the Fragrance Foundation Awards 2026. In 2025, Highland Retreat, Scotland took Silver for Best New Wellness Product at the Pure Beauty Awards, where Told London also took Bronze for Best Indie Brand; the brand was a finalist for Best Newcomer at the Fragrance Foundation Awards and for Emerging Brand and Conscious Brand at the Boutique Star Awards, and graduated from the Fragrance Foundation’s Next Gen programme. Our Awards and press page keeps the full list.
Our stockists page lists the shops carrying Told London and the dates new ones open. Otherwise the range is sold through this website, which ships to the UK, Europe and most of the world.
Slow luxury means making fewer, better things and keeping them. Fragrance is usually a consumable: bought, used, thrown away. We make the opposite. The porcelain is yours for life, illustrated and built to be kept, and the fragrance is refilled when it runs low. The pleasure lasts because the object does.
We are working on our first eau de parfum, fragrance to be worn rather than lit. The newsletter will carry the news first.
Because of what goes into them. Fine porcelain rather than glass, illustrated by Kerry Lemon and made to last for years of refills. Fragrance composed by the same houses that make fine personal perfume, at a high load, so a 300g candle fills a room for sixty hours. Poured by hand in England. And a refill costs less than a new candle, so the price of the vessel is paid once.
